    Analytical study of the optimum geometric configuration of a space shuttle materials laboratory

    A steady state, collisionless flow analysis was made of the density distribution within a hemisphere-disc system due to independent, uniformly distributed internal gas sources. The model was used to estimate the density within a molecular shield, deployed from the shuttle orbiter, which contained internal experiments having a prescribed gas source. Contour plots of the density distribution within the system were presented for disc-to-hemisphere radius ratios of .1, .3, .5, .7, and for disc-to-hemisphere surface emission flux density ratios of .01, 1, 100. The hemisphere-disc system was compared to the empty hemisphere, and it was found that if the disc emission flux density was the same as the hemisphere and the disc radius was not greater than 1/3 of the hemisphere radius, the increase in density at the center of the hemisphere-disc system was less than 50%

    Measurement of calcium isotopes (δ44Ca) using a multicollector TIMS technique

    We propose a new“multicollector technique” for the thermal ionization mass spectrometer (TIMS) measurement of calcium (Ca) isotope ratios improving average internal statistical uncertainty of the 44Ca/40Ca measurements by a factor of 2–4 and average sample throughput relative to the commonly used “peak jumping method” by a factor of 3. Isobaric interferences with potassium (40K+) and titanium (48Ti+) or positively charged molecules like 24Mg19F+, 25Mg19F+, 24Mg16O+ and 27Al16O+ can either be corrected or are negligible. Similar, peak shape defects introduced by the large dispersion of the whole Ca isotope mass range from 40–48 atomic mass units (amu) do not influence Ca-isotope ratios. We use a 43Ca/48Ca double spike with an iterative double spike correction algorithm for precise isotope measurement

    Iris is a system for coding multiple causes of death in ICD-10 and for the selection of the underlying cause of death, based on a knowledge base composed by a large number of rules. With the adoption of ICD-11, those rules need translation to ICD-11. A pre-project has been carried out to evaluate feasibility of transition to ICD-11, which included the analysis of the logical meta-rules needed for rule translation and development of a prototype support system for the expert that will translate the coding rules

    Magnetic-Field Induced Quantum Critical Point in YbRh2_2Si2_2

    We report low-temperature calorimetric, magnetic and resistivity measurements on the antiferromagnetic (AF) heavy-fermion metal YbRh2_2Si2_2 (TN={T_N =} 70 mK) as a function of magnetic field BB. While for fields exceeding the critical value Bc0{B_{c0}} at which TN0{T_N\to0} the low temperature resistivity shows an AT2{AT^2} dependence, a 1/(BBc0){1/(B-B_{c0})} divergence of A(B){A(B)} upon reducing BB to Bc0{B_{c0}} suggests singular scattering at the whole Fermi surface and a divergence of the heavy quasiparticle mass. The observations are interpreted in terms of a new type of quantum critical point separating a weakly AF ordered from a weakly polarized heavy Landau-Fermi liquid state.Comment: accepted for publication in Phys.     Multitouch Experiment Instructions to Promote Self-Regulation in Inquiry-Based Learning in School Laboratories

    Multitouch experiment instructions (MEIs), implemented as interactive eBooks, are learning tools for pupils that offer various digital support tools and enable pupils to individualize their learning. They may be applied to contexts such as inquiry-based experiments in school laboratories, which involve highly demanding cognitive processes and require a high level of self-regulation. Self-regulation has been shown to be reliably promoted by interventions which include the targeted training of self-regulation strategies. A MEI was designed as an interactive eBook on experiments on the topic “Analysis of Cola”, suitable for an inquiry-based learning environment such as a school lab. The MEI’s potential to promote self-regulated learning was investigated by comparing it to a MEI with digital, integrated self-regulation training. The data revealed a significant increase of self-regulation in the control group, which consisted of pupils experimenting with the MEI on its own, and one experimental group, which included pupils that were supported by the MEI with an additional self-regulation training. It can be assumed that the MEI’s ability to promote self-regulated learning is comparable to the results achieved by an additional self-regulation training which explicitly addressed self-regulation strategies. This highlights the MEI’s potential to promote self-regulated learning in an indirect approach
